Phil Collins: Father & Son

Relationships between human beings can be complex, and also some of them become essential in our lives and leave their mark for the rest of our days.

Phil Collins has been going through difficult times to play the drums. So he asked his son Nicholas, who is also a great drummer, to join and play in his concert tours.

In his autobiography («Not dead yet», 2016) Phil has told us about his relationship with his own father who couldn’t openly support Phil’s passion for music. At this point we can say that maybe Phil has given to his son what he wishes he could have received from his father, just as a repairing behavior and also a sublime act. In that sense, we could hear Phil saying again and again at his live shows, while introducing the band members: «On the drums, my son Nicholas, I’m proud of him «. So that line is what he had always wanted to hear from his father, and saying it of his son is a way of dealing with his own loss and pain.

Addendum: This website is not intended to judge or criticize anyone, so it is not intended to judge or criticize Phil Collins’ father.
Instead, this is meant to be a reflection about understanding. It’s about seeing things from different positions.
The fact that Phil Collins’ father did what he did doesn’t imply that he didn’t love his son. In fact, he probably loved Phil Collins with all his heart. And maybe Phil Collins knows it, and maybe that’s the other reason why Phil Collins does what he does with his own son.
