Paul McCartney: Let it Be
The one and only Sir Paul McCartney, talked a while ago about the day he wrote his unforgettable song “Let it be”: one day he went to sleep and had a dream. In that dream his mother appeared to him just saying “Let it be”. She had died twelve years ago. Then he woke up and wrote down the song.
Since his mother’s death, Paul couldn’t recall her face so easily.
But in this dream twelve years later, her face appeared completely clear.
Sometimes when someone loses a loved one, they may experience a feeling of having been abandoned, and this may cause them to feel, on an unconscious level, angry with that loved one. Later, as time goes by, pain will come, indicating that the departure is being accepted.
We may then think that that difficulty experienced by Paul was actually the expression of that anger, that is, ultimately the difficulty of accepting her death. And later, when he had that dream where her face clearly appeared, that was the expression of his acceptance about her departure.
Thus, in the song’s lyrics, he says:
“And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be.”
We all wish our hour of darkness would never arrive, but sometimes we can’t keep it from coming. So if it happens, it can be a time of great understanding if we are open and willing to learn from it.
Just let it be…
